About Us

Our Voices, Our Stories

The idea for Kisumu feminists’ society (KFS) was birthed in 2018 but started working and operating in 2019 after the anti-femicide march. The main activity that thrust us into the limelight was “Humanizing Black Female Bodies’ feminist convening in September 2019. KFS was officially formed in 2019 at the Young Women in Leadership feminist forum that was held in Obunga.
The idea to form a feminist organization that worked with ALL women, ITGNC persons came from the need to have feminist spaces that do not discriminate against other women based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, economic status, s ethnicity and disability etc.

Kisumu feminists’ society was legally registered in 2020 as Winam Riwrwok Mar Hera to mean “Winam Circle of love’. KFS currently has over 40 registered members and has done programs that have benefited over 1000 women, ITGNC persons from 2018 to date.

Our Values

1. Feminist Leadership – Leadership has always been deeply gendered in favor of male front runners. At KFS, we believe that feminist leadership is an important part of bringing change and building agency. We exercise feminist leadership in the following ways.

  • Freedom and free expression – We create an environment where we can have free expression through various mediums, allowing a free flow of ideas and challenging traditional working norms.
  • Wellness and self-care – At KFS, we believe that to be able to take care of our community, we must take care of ourselves. Taking care of our physical and mental well-being allows us to be sound and really focused on our work
  • Lifelong learning and unlearning – We are committed to continuous learning and reflection to drive innovation, personal and organizational growth, allowing us to better serve our constituents and to challenge internalized discrimination.
  • Collaboration – Forming strong partnerships that would enrich our programs and serve our beneficiaries are an integral part of our work. We believe working with like-minded individuals and organizations will augment our impact

2. Diversity and Inclusion – We are committed to maintaining a space that is safe and open where our members and beneficiaries have a sense of belonging. KFS will continue being a place where the diversity in our community is valued.

3. Adopting Afrocentric perspectives – We approach all our programming through a model of social work that upholds, and incorporates the common cultural experiences, values, and interpretations that cut across our African communities. This ensures we respond to the lived realities of our beneficiaries.

4. Transparency and accountability – We believe in upholding the highest levels of integrity and openness in our work to continue influencing positive social change.
